Affordable homes to be built in Clevedon

There are plans to build 60 affordable homes on the site

Dozens of new affordable homes are to be built in Clevedon on a site once earmarked for a new hospital.

The news follows a ‘back to back’ deal where North Somerset Council purchased the Millcross site from NHS Property Services and sold it immediately on to social housing provider, Alliance Homes.

The deal has now been completed and plans to build 60 affordable homes – a mix of flats and houses – on the site announced.

Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (BNSSG CCG) gave the green light to NHS Property Services earlier this year to sell off the site.

The derelict site, which has laid boarded up for several years, had to be advertised on the public sector land register ePIMs for 40 days with public sector bodies invited to register their interest in the site.

Had there been no interest from the public sector, the land would have been put up for sale on the open market.

North Somerset Council intervened as if the land had gone for sale on the open market, Alliance Homes was likely to have been outbid by developers eager to get their hands on the 2.2 acre plot.

The site is already earmarked within the council’s site allocation plan as suitable for residential development.

A spokesperson at NHS Property Services said: We are delighted to have been able to agree the sale of this site to the council and that it will deliver affordable housing for the community. The sale of this surplus site meets our joint aims of generating a receipt to be reinvested straight back into the NHS at a time when it is most needed and contributing towards the Government’s housing targets.

The deal comes at the same time as a new partnership has been announced between the council and Alliance Homes.

The partnership will see the authority work with Alliance Homes to identify sites for new homes for social rent, affordable rent and shared ownership.
