Milwaukee Alderman Khalif Rainey is trying to buy tenants more time to pay rent and remain in their residences.
I know it’s a lot of worrying going on, renter Ricky Fontane said Tuesday. Some people were behind before the COVID hit and now they’re three months behind.
For some residents, there’s a real fear about being about to pay rent during the coronavirus pandemic.
Many workers have been furloughed or laid off.
Some landlords went to court to issue eviction notices.
Eric Hilkert is the landlord of East Side Commons at North Van Buren and East Knapp streets in Milwaukee. He said, he doesn’t want to evict tenants but he also has bills to pay and now has no choice. What people are getting from what the governor said, if you can stay for three months don’t worry about paying, and that’s what they all do, so now it’s eviction time, Hilkert said.
Rainey sent a letter Wednesday to Gov. Tony Evers on behalf of tenants who were worried about losing their homes. He asked for an extension on Wisconsin’s moratorium.
I would like to see the moratorium extended until the day the rent assistance program is launched. To me that makes good sense. I think if we do not do that, we leave many in our community vulnerable to eviction, Rainey said.
The governor did announce a $25 million plan for rent assistance programs. But it will not begin accepting applications until June 8. It could help keep some Wisconsinites from becoming homeless.
It’s getting hard, especially with not being able to work like we need to, one renter said.
The Milwaukee County Clerk of Courts said 37 eviction notices have been filed since Tuesday.
On average, there are about 50 per day.
