Springfield to have inspection program for rental homes soon

People actually pay to live in houses filled with mold that have electrical issues and may have structural problems.

City inspectors combed through the West Central Neighbourhood inspecting houses as part of the Safe Housing Pilot Program.

“It’s just allowed to continue. You see the ‘For Rent’ sign and all of a sudden people are in there,” she said.

The program was used to collect information on the condition of houses in the Zone One neighbourhood. It was in response to the zone blitz meetings held by city leaders last year. Neighbours listed nuisance properties and unsafe housing as their main concerns.
