Kodi is used by millions of people to stream TV, films and sports. But Kodi users are being warned that the software could soon be banned as the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has launched a review to put a stop to the sale and use of the devices.
The IPO has called a consultation asking for help from several groups with experience of investigating and prosecuting offences related to streaming devices. The main concerns are around those selling “fully loaded” boxes, which come pre-packed with these additional apps. Their popularity is causing concern for UK authorities.
The Kodi software itself is not illegal, nor is it illegal to sell devices with Kodi pre-installed on them. However, many of these Kodi devices come pre-loaded with third party plug-ins and add-ons that allow users to stream illegal content to their TV. Selling these “fully loaded” TV set-top devices is a breach of the Copyright, Designs and Patent Act 1988.
