Residents living in areas targeted by burglars are being issued special kits and being given crime prevention advice.
Neighbourhood police officers were out this week sharing property marking kits and talking to residents about other measures to secure their homes.
They were joined by Chief Superintendent Chris Bowen.
Chief Supt Bowen explained the property marking kits cannot stop burglaries alone, but can help police once the burglars are arrested.
He said: We understand that burglaries are some of the most intrusive types of crimes you can experience. Your home is a place you should feel safe, and it is unacceptable for anybody to make you feel otherwise.
Burglary is a priority for the force and us in Oldham, and we are committed to taking robust action against those involved in this type of crime, ensuring all available lines of enquiry are pursued and offenders are brought to justice, he said.
Chief Supt Bowen added: Our teams have been out supporting our community, giving them the technology that proves who the property belongs to.
Whilst we will do everything we can to prevent it, if you should be unfortunate enough to be burgled, we can identify the property as belonging to you, prosecute an offender and return it to you, he said. These kits have been funded through our Crime Reduction Partnership.
Towards the end of last year, GMP Oldham introduced a team dedicated to arresting burglars and detecting burglaries.
Since its introduction, more than 40 people have been arrested for burglaries and the detection rates have also doubled.
But Chief Supt Bowen said there is more residents themselves can do to deter criminals.
He said: As the warm weather approaches, we need your help to make life harder for thieves and to keep Oldham safe. If you are out enjoying the sunshine, please make sure windows and doors are locked.
He said: Use an alarm if you have one, and if you are heading out or on holiday, use light timers to give the impression the house is occupied.
