Outline plans for 62 new homes on a greenfield site in Oakham have been given the go-ahead by Rutland County Council.

Bellway Homes said in its application that it wanted to build 43 homes for private sale, and 19 ‘affordable’ properties to be available to rent or bought through shared ownership, on an 8.3 acre site off Braunston Road, south west of the town.

Bellway will need to submit a more detailed plan for the site before the scheme can go ahead.

Phil Standen, managing director of Bellway Eastern Counties, said: We will be liaising closely with Rutland County Council as we finalise our detailed plans for consideration.

We will be building a mix of homes to cater for a wide range of buyers. Thirty per cent of the homes will be affordable housing to allow local people to live in a new neighbourhood in their town, he said.

In the plans, Bellway said it intended to create a public open space as well as a children’s play area on the site.

This is the developer’s third project in the area in recent years, building 200 homes at The Maltings in Barleythorpe, and 61 properties at Huntsman Drive in Oakham, on the former site of Parks School.

Mr Standen said: We are no strangers to building in Oakham and recognise and appreciate the unique character of the county of Rutland. The development on land south of Braunston Road will create a new gateway into the town.

He said the style of the properties would ‘reflect the character of the local area’ and new green spaces, native woodland planting and wildflower grassland on the development would ‘provide ample opportunity for informal recreation, exercise and play’.
