A Surrey town has been celebrated as one of the best places to buy a property in 2020 by a top magazine.

According to Homes & Property, Camberley should be on the radar for any prospective home buyer this year because of London’s widening commuter belt.

The property magazine hailed the town as “nice and leafy”, “deeply affordable by Surrey standards” and said there is a good range of property.

A description on their website reads: On the fringes of Bracknell Forest, Camberley was once a dangerous territory infested by highwaymen looking to rob travellers on their way to the capital. Law and order was imposed by the arrival of the famed Royal Military Academy at nearby Sandhurst, and Camberley grew up during the 19th century to serve it.

The magazine praised the town’s amenities – shopping centres, a cinema, theatre, sports centre – as well as its train services to Waterloo. A season ticket starts from £4,028.

Above all, though, Homes & Property said schools are “a reason to move to Camberley”. They include Prior Heath Infant School and Crawley Ridge Infant School, both rated “outstanding” by Ofsted.

Kings International College, a secondary school, is considered “good” by the government watchdog.

However, it’s not all positive. Despite the train station providing routes to Waterloo, the commute has been described as “a real chugger”, taking more than one hour.

And although a lot of investment is flooding into the town, the magazine said the town centre is “a bit clone-ish and soulless”.

According to Rightmove, properties in Camberley had an overall average price of £466,014 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Camberley during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £671,321. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £396,826, with flats fetching £265,876.

Overall, sold prices in Camberley over the last year were 9% up on the previous year and 3% up on the 2017 peak of £452,892.
