Ellesmere Port is fast turning into a housing hotspot after a recent property boom.
Keeping up with the town’s Local Plan target of 4,800 by 2030, 2,355 new houses, flats and apartments were built in the area between 2010 and 2020.
The latest figures are part of a 10-year plan by the Ellesmere Port Development Board, working with Cheshire West and Chester Council, to create thousands of new jobs, attract investment and build thousands of new homes to Ellesmere Port.
Details of more than 600 properties being planned were shared with the Ellesmere Port Development Board, with major developers, including Barratts, Redrow, Bellway and more, all present in the area.
81 affordable homes were completed in the past 12 months across Ellesmere Port, which the council says offered a mixture of rented accommodation and low-cost home ownership properties.
Councillor Matt Bryan, Cabinet Member for Housing, Planning & Climate Emergency, said: Ellesmere Port has proved to be a magnet for new housing, the combination of growing confidence in the area, exciting new job opportunities and investments from both the public and private sectors continues to attract new developments.
The speed at which the new houses are being bought and rented shows the developers were right and they now have a challenge to keep up with the demand. Another important factor is the mix we have between affordable and market rate properties and the range from one room to large family houses being built, he said.
He said: Whilst Ellesmere Port industry is positioning to be leading the new green revolution in carbon capture and hydrogen production, it is encouraging to see the prospectus for Rossfield Park promoting properties exceeding standard energy-efficiency requirements by including technology to lower energy bills and carbon emissions plus electric vehicle charging points and other green technology.
The council is asking residents for their thoughts on housing as part of the consultation for the Local Plan, he said. Thirty-seven per cent of people who have completed the poll on the website support new homes being built in their area but what standards would you like to see, or improvements made?
Currently, 1,128 houses are under construction with a stream of new planning applications. The council forecast for new affordable housing in the next year sees an additional 172 homes. This is in addition to 115 units on the Anwyl/Torus site at Rossfield Road and 98 on Ledsham Road phases one to three.
